Design

Design is about turning ideas into things that can be made and sold. Without design, the company would have nothing to make.

Designers in the clothing industry often work in teams. They have to take notice of what the market research and evaluation staff find out and then design the clothes that their customers will want.

They have to understand ways of making things in the factory and the different machines and processes that are used. They also need to know about different fabrics and fibres and what is best for different types of clothing. They need to be able to use computers and to know about how garments are cut out and put together.

They will probably have been to college to learn about how to design and make clothing but they will also learn a lot more by being in the job.

Much use is made today of computer aided design for both the design of fabrics and apparel.
